Hembrug recently supplied a horizontal type combined of ultra precision turning and grinding center to a customer in Germany.  This special “hybrid” machine is designed to perform finishing operations in sub micrometer tolerances. The concept includes the customer parts of corrosion free material to be taken up between centers. First the contours are precision turned within 1 micrometer form and dimensional accuracy using a single point tool. During the second operation the surface contour is finish ground, thereby eliminating further finishing operations.  Inside and outside geometries can be ultra precision finish turned and micro ground with this new, highly efficient machine type. 

The design of the new Hembrug machine is based on proven technology: black granite for the machine base, hydrostatic main spindle and hydrostatic guideways for the slides. On top of the flat type X-axis a rotary B-axis is mounted. The rotary table accommodates the finish turning tools as well as a high performance grinding spindle unit suitable for internal- and external grinding operations. The stiffness and extremely small indexing error of the rotary B-axis allows finish grinding of complex contours in challenging materials. In order to fine adjust the position of the precision single point turning tools as well as each position of the dressing tools within 1 micrometer a dedicated microscope and CCD camera system is integrated.
